Opening Prayer: May I be filled with the fullness of God. Scripture: Luke 4: 1-2 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left eh Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Meditation: Jesus walked in solitude in the wilderness where after fasting for forty days and nights, emptying himself, he waited for what would rise up within him. Lent offers the opportunity to imitate Jesus’s time in the wilderness. Though you probably will not fast for 40 days, you can still empty yourself and wait, as Jesus waited, open to whatever might rise up within you. When you enter the Labyrinth this week, imagine yourself going into the wilderness. Think of the path to the center as a symbol for letting go, for releasing any distracting thoughts or feelings that come up. As you walk, hold your arms down beside you, your hands palm down as if you’re emptying them. In the center, hold your palms upward to receive what rises within you. When you head back out of the Labyrinth, hold your palms together in prayer and thanksgiving. Pause for Thought: “God wants to give us something but cannot, because our hands are full – there’s nowhere for Him to put it.” C.S. Lewis Preparatory Prayer: May I release the meanderings of my ego mind so I may be filled with God’s spirit. Labyrinth Walk: At the Labyrinth entrance, pray to release and open. When you step into the Labyrinth, imagine that you are entering the wilderness, a place of solitude and emptiness. As you walk, allow yourself to empty to let go of expectations of what should or might happen. Holding your palms down, be aware of worries, concerns, fears, resentments or any mundane thoughts currently occupting your mind. Picture them falling out of your hands as you walk. Pause at every turn, staying for a moment if any nagging thoughts or emotions seem determined to linger in your mind or heart. Breathe deeply, saying, “love” on the inhale and “Release” on the exhale. When you are ready, continue down the path. When you reach the center, give thanks for your walk inward. Turn your palms up as an invitation for God to fill you. Open to any insights, feelings, images, intuition or messages that might come to you. Do not try to force anything. If nothing comes, know that God fills you whether you know it or not.
